Like the vast majority of Netent slots, Universal Monsters starts with a beautiful opening sequence. We see the Phantom sitting high above the streets of Paris, nestled besides two gruesome gargoyle’s. With a flourish and dramatic music, he sweeps his cloak and disappears into the night.
The stage is set.
The Phantom of the Opera is a globally-renowned story, most famously told by Andrew Lloyd Weber in his theatre show. In this version, however, we’re more concerned with winning cash than singing songs.
Universal Monsters has an adrenaline-fuelled bonus round, wild respins, and a “pick and click” special feature – all of this on top of the stunning base gameplay. It’s a medium variance game, with semi-regular wins.
The slot mirrors the famous story, from the eerie music to the beautiful (yet tragic) stage where the reels are set. If you are familiar with the Phantom’s tale, then you understand the theme of this slot.

Universal Monsters is a 5-reel, 4-row, 40-payline video slot from world-class developers Netent. Players can wager anywhere from 20 cents to $200 on every spin, which opens up the chance for major wins.
The Phantom and Christine (our protagonists) are the highest-value symbols, worth 200 and 100 coins respectively for 5 on a line. Other symbols include Christine’s ruby ring, a golden yellow rose, the looking glass and a dagger. There are also 5 wilds:
- Stacked Mask
- Masked Phantom
- Stacked Phantom
- Stacked Christine
These wilds all substitute for one another, as well as any other symbol in the game except scatters and bonus symbols.
One attractive in-game feature are Masked Phantom Respins. When a Stacked Phantom lands fully on reel 1 and a Stacked Mask lands fully on reel 5, they lock in place for a bonus respin.
Free Spins Round
If the game’s scatter symbol (the golden chandelier) lands on reels 1, 3 and 5 in a single spin, the free spins round is unlocked. When a wild appears on a reel, it produces a dagger and swipes a series of ropes to the side of the screen.
Once all ropes are cut, the round ends. Fortunately, once one reels produces a dagger, it cannot produce a second. This is a great round, and way more exciting than traditional batches of spins.
Pick and Click
When the Stacked Phantom and Stacked Christine both land fully in a single spin, we get to play the Pick and Click game:
- Stage One – Faced with 8 roses, the player must pick one at a time. Most reveal cash prizes, but others contain blockers. If you choose a blocker…
- Stage Two – Choose one of three mirrors for a 1x, 2x or 3x multiplier on the winnings from stage one.
Players can win a maximum of 7200 coins in this short bonus game, making it incredibly lucrative!
As with every game Netent has produced in recent years, Universal Monsters is well above the average standard. Graphics, storyline, music, bonuses and payouts – it’s all superb. We wholeheartedly recommend this game to all players, but especially fans of the musical!
