Leander’s latest video slot is inspired by the infamous poem by Dante Alighieri: The Divine Comedy. The poem is about Dante’s travels through hell, purgatory, and eventually heaven; this game features characters from all 3 areas!
Gameplay Overview & Symbols
As you’d expect from a slot based on a poem about the horrors of hell and purgatory, this game is set within a fiery, steamy, terrifying underworld! The game’s logo is also an ode to the poem, with “Afterlife” in the sky-blue-and-white colours of heaven, while “Inferno” is set ablaze with orange flame.
The theme is compounded with the symbols:
These are all characters featured in the poem, appearing at different points during the journey. Anyway, most of us only care about Dante’s Inferno because of Dan Brown’s blockbuster novel – we really want to hear about the slot’s performance and mechanics!
It’s pretty enjoyable to play. The sound effects are solid and reassuring, while the “spin” button is nice and reactive, meaning you can play relatively quickly. The maximum wager amount is $200 per spin, way more than you need to satisfy most players.
It’s worth keeping an eye on the game’s wild symbol, since it not only completes winning combinations but also adds a 2x multiplier to the standard payout! Even better is the Hell Freezes Over Feature where up to 5 wilds are randomly assigned to the reels; after that spin, the wilds become fully stacked and lock in place for a respin!
If new wilds land on the reels, you are awarded another respin; this continues until no more wilds land, and can be highly lucrative.
As with most games, the main special feature (in addition to Hell Freezes Over) consists of a free spins round. Unlike most games, however, Afterlife Inferno gives you a choice. Land 3 scatters then choose between:
- Inferno spins – 15 free spins, where every winning spin will receive a multiplier of 3x-15x. If you land another 3 scatters, you’ll receive another 15 spins!
- Purgatory spins – Another 15 spins, but this time the multiplier is cumulative: when you win, the multiplier goes up from 1x to 2x, then to 3x, then 4x and so on. Whenever you land 2 scatters you’ll get one extra spin, and three extra spins for 3 scatters!
- Paradise spins – Only 12 spins this time, but any wilds will become sticky for up to 6 spins. There are also special wilds (Eternity Wilds) which remain for the full round. Needless to say, a good set of wilds can produce a heavenly payout! Sadly you cannot retrigger spins.
From the alluring artwork to the generous payouts when you activate a bonus round, this game offers a huge amount to players. It’s not the most advanced game of all-time, but if we compared all games visually to Yggdrasil’s latest creations, nothing would pass the test.
It’s good fun, well-made, and absolutely worth trying!
