Not every game needs shiny bells and loud whistles in order to make an impact, and that’s something the team at Nextgen understands. Simple concepts, when brilliantly executed, can produce top-quality gaming experiences. Queen of the Castle opens up with a tasteful animation, introducing you to the castle itself. When the doors open, the fun begins.
It’s a bright, shiny and cartoonish design, perfectly encapsulating the vibe: relaxed, and fun. Some slots get a bit lazy when it comes to symbol design, but these are elegant and professional – more like Disney characters than your usual slots symbols!
For all its cartoonish whimsy, Queen of the Castle also boasts some serious guns. You can wager up to $100 a spin, and the jackpot is worth a whopping 4,800x your initial stake!
Remember the old Super Mario games on the Nintendo, where Mario scaled a tower to save the ever-troubled Princess Peach? Queen of the Castle throws me right back to that game. It’s fun and entertaining, and none to serious.
Gameplay and Layout
The aesthetics of the game are second to none. It’s not particularly advanced – no 3D holograms or anything – but the attention to detail is superb, and it really makes you feel like you’re inside a video game. Following a relatively new trend, the game has a 3x4x4x4x3 reel layout.
It’s a 576 ways to win slot, which means you can’t vary the number of paylines. There are 40 coins total, and you can wager anywhere from $0.40 to $100 on every spin. They aren’t the highest stakes in the world, but they’ll suit the majority of players.
The important symbols are the red velvet throne, money bags, little dogs and the Queen of the Castle banners. The banners act as the game’s wild, meaning they substitute for any other symbol in order to make a winning combination. There’s also the scatter (the shield), and landing 3 of them in a single spin returns 120x your stake and 14 free spins!
There are a few special symbols we haven’t yet mentioned which bring a bit of spice to the base game:
- Red Mystery Chest – When this symbol fills the whole of reel 1, all royal symbols (10, jack, queen, king) are replaced by mystery chests! These are unlocked to reveal a higher-value symbol underneath.
- Purple Mystery Chest – The same as the red chests, but occurring on reel 5 and working backwards!
A randomly-triggered feature causes vines to erupt and wrap around reels 2-4, spinning them around until they land on the same symbol! Could be a bigger money maker.
As we said, landing 3 scatters at once not only gives you 120x your stake, but also 14 free spins. The scatter is now replaced with a Crown symbol, and whenever you win one of these, it fills your “Crown Meter” at the top of the screen. The more crowns you get, the more free spins you earn and the better your odds of winning!
Sometimes you can’t beat a game which is fun, simple and understated. We really enjoyed playing Queen of the Castle, but we know it’s not for everyone. For those who don’t take their slots too seriously, we recommend it highly!
