Hot off the press, Mild Rockers is the first Lightning Box Games slot of 2018. The game is quite a bizarre combination of old-fashioned design, modern mechanics and excellent logo manipulation during the free spins round (more on that later!)
We’ve already tested a bunch of new online slots since the new year came around, and this is definitely at the lower end in terms of graphics and audio quality. When compared to the likes of Cosmic Eclipse by Netent, the game seems to lacka bit of love and dedication.
Then again, making a graphics-heavy game obviously wasn’t part of the LBG plan! Their focus seems to have been on creating an exciting free spins round (actually two free spin rounds) and creating a very specific rock music vibe.
On loading the game, the first thing you notice is that the sound effects and music are a bit…aged. They feel out of the place in modern gaming, and the reel animations are a bit clunky. However, the theme is very clear: throwback to 80s rock music, slamming electric guitar riffs and edgy purple colours.
Gameplay and Layout
Mild Rockers is a six-reel game with a 3-4-5-5-4-3 layout. While it’s not the first slot to use this design, it’s still quite uncommon and adds an interesting dimension to things. There are 80 paylines, non-negotiable, and you can vary your bet amount from $0.50 to $125 per spin.
The usual low-value symbols are there to be found: Jack, Queen, King, Ace. On top of that you have a few more interesting fellas:
- The rocker
- Lips (scatter)
As with most games, the wild can substitute for every normal symbol, while landing 3+ scatters on a single turn launches the free spins bonus round.
Free Spins Galore
As you know, landing 3 of those bright pink lips will launch the free spins round. The more scatters collected, the more spins you receive – the minimum is 8.
During your free spins, any subsequent scatters are collected and become “Encore Spins” – but we’ll get to those. You play through the free spins as usual, hopefully racking a nice kitty of both coins and Encore Spins.
Once they’re depleted, the game goes crazy, flips the “M” into a “W” and starts playing Wild Spins! These are tremendous fun, since the atmosphere and music are amped to a new level. Even better, from our testing the wins seem much more lucrative here compared to the base game!
We’re not exaggerating to say that the base game is pretty underwhelming. The soundtrack is very repetitive, the action noises are grating and the wins are almost always disappointing. However, the game could be worth your time if you regularly activate the Wild Rocking free spins – they bring home plenty of bacon!
