Travel through time and face the powers of Ancient Greece, with Age of the Gods: Medusa and Monsters. The game is designed around that fabled, hideous Gorgon Medusa, and her ability to transform any living creature into stone with a glance. While the game is based on ancient happenings, the payouts are very much in current money.
New games from Playtech can be hit or miss; on which side of the fence will this one fall?
Gameplay Overview & Symbols
While ostensibly a dark slot based on the haunting story of Medusa, the petrifying old Gorgon whose gaze cursed humans into stone, in reality Medusa and Monsters ‘sexes up’ the story, with completely unnecessary cleavage shots to get attention. Looks like Playtech know their audience – or they completely missed the mark on this one. Same goes for Aphrodite, though at least she is a Goddess of fertility.
The artsy reels are set against a beach backdrop, with the tide rolling in and out of picture; a pleasing visual element. In terms of actual gameplay, Aphrodite gives the highest payout: 150 coins for six across a payline. More importantly, the Medusa symbol is the game’s wild and this will expand to fill the entire reel every time it appears. Since every reel contains wilds, and every symbol can appear stacked at any time, this can be a hugely powerful tool.
Otherwise the gameplay is, to be frank, extremely dull. Except for the busty female characters, the symbols are utterly remarkable and ignite zero interest in the player. When a winning combination is landed, there are no significant animations or changes to the music, and the on-screen paylines look 20 years old. Without the redeeming bonus rounds, this would not be a game worth playing.
Medusa’s Gaze Free Games
As with the majority of online slots, there is a special round to be unlocked by landing 3 sets of ‘bonus’ symbols, on reels 2, 4, and 6. Players are awarded 6 free spins, and select a new ‘high paying symbol’ which yields extra cash during the round. There is a full-sized Medusa symbol on reel 6, and after each spin she moves left one reel; when she exits the screen, the game ends.
As part of the Age of the Gods series, this slot is also fed by a group of four progressive jackpots. This is randomly activated, and includes the Power, Extra Power, Super Power or Ultimate Power jackpots.
Honestly, there is not much attractive about this game. The symbols are dull, the payouts underwhelming, and the animations non-existent. While it is possible to yield a nice payout from the game, it is void of any charm or character which might incentivize play over a rival game.
