Imagine being away on a distant planet, discovering crystals never seen before by the human eye: that’s what it feels like to play this slot. You’re not just a player, but a space adventurer. Despite being quite futuristic in theme, the design is very much from planet Earth: a 5×3 reel layout, standard-looking symbols, and the currency in Canadian dollars!
What is the Slot’s Theme?
We can’t really tell whether this is a sci-fi, chemistry, adventure, or simply an artistic slot. Maybe it’s all of the above combined, and that’s what we like about it: the game stands out, just slightly, from the crowd of indistinguishable, overused themes.
What About the Gameplay and Layout?
Seemingly set into an active, gem-encrusted volcano, the game is immediately eye-catching. Don’t get us wrong, it’s not cutting-edge or extravagant – on the contrary, it’s very simple and reserved, and yet it somehow manages to be engaging at the same time.
The spin animation is smooth, and sound effects pleasing on the ear. Unfortunately, with a 95% RTP, there are many by-the-numbers players who will be giving this slot a wide berth. You’ll notice that the more edges a symbol has, the more it’s worth. Here’s a full look at the symbols:
- Icosahedron (we could be making these, for all you know…)
- Super crystal
- Wild crystal
Any Special Features?
Upgradium only offers a single unique feature: Upgrading Wilds. Basically, if you get a winning combination involving the wild, all the other symbols in the combo are upgraded to the next-highest value.
This kind of upgrade is also used in the Crystallisation Respins, which occur when the orange crystal lands on the hotspot in the middle of reel 3. This causes a chain of respins, and every winning combination again means upgraded symbols! Players get to respin until there’s no payout.
This is a fascinating progression, and players only need a couple of respins to generate a considerable payout.
To sum up, Upgradium is an enjoyable game. It doesn’t offer anything groundbreaking – though their Upgrading Wilds is a nice touch – but it’s attractive, enjoyable, and an easy way to pass a few hours. While it’s not the highest-paying Playtech game we’ve ever seen, it certainly does the job.
