Welcome to Asia’s most beautiful garden, and the home of the Jade Butterfly. The genuinely retro design is pleasing on the eye, not like many of the crude, cheaply-made “retro” slots we’ve seen released in recent months. In addition to the attractive symbols and simplistic gameplay, there are a few clever treats in store for players.

Gameplay Overview & Symbols
Jade Butterfly is the definition of retro in the online casino space. The symbols are fairly old-fashioned, but the designer has clearly put a lot of time into creating that specific look. There’s the jingly woodwind music that’s typical of any Asian-themed game, as well as the not-so-popular feature of individual reel respins.
Individual respins have been tested on a load of games over the years, but they’ve never really taken off. Basically this gives players the ability to respin any reel, after any spin, for a price. The trouble is that the pricing of these respins gives players no incentive to play: if the odds are remotely good of completing a winning combination, the cost of a respin is completely unaffordable.
Conversely, any spins you can afford are just not going to lead to a win. It’s an interesting oddity to new players, but for serious gamblers this feature is a waste of time.
Throughout the base game, wilds can only appear on reels 2 and 4, which is a bit disappointing. During our testing the wilds didn’t appear more frequently than on the majority of games, so we’re putting this down as a weakness compared to most of this slot’s rivals. The remaining symbols are made up by a variety of flowers, playing card numbers, and the all-valuable “free spins” symbol.
We’re happy to report that during the free spins round, the wilds are available on every reel, enhancing your ability to generate big wins! There are 5 scatters on the reels, and you need to land 3, 4, or 5 of them at once to unlock the bonus round.
- 3 scatters – 2x payout
- 4 scatters – 10x payout
- 5 scatters – 100x payout
In all 3 cases, you’ll receive 13 free spins. Once you’ve played through all your spins (which are completely retriggerable by the way), and you’ve amassed a small fortune in winnings, your earnings are multiplied by 3! Just another little extra from the team at Pragmatic.
Pragmatic Play has edged away from its traditionally action-packed creations and gone for something simple, understated, and retro. The base gameplay is relatively good (we experienced regular wins for reasonable amounts) but it’s the free spins round which makes it. As with most games you’re not going to take home the big bucks unless you trigger the bonus, so good luck!
